16×20 acrylic and foil on canvas. My personal homage to Bob Ross, painted to “Jackie’s Strength” by Tori Amos.
Listening to this song always takes me way back in memory to my own life the first time I heard it, how I was putting my trust in another person the same way that Tori sings of in the song. It’s soft folds of sheer black and white fabric pulled around me in a cloud and pierced with with golden flashes and drops of red blood.
I can’t claim that I intentionally painted this piece to look like a cherry blossom tree, but I also don’t fully understand what influences me to paint a piece in the exact way I end up painting it. The process is always very intuitive, and sometimes produces surprising results. Eventually the shape of the tree in the foreground became pronounced, and I decided to develop it that way.
And in that way it became my tribute and homage to one of my personal heroes, the gone but never forgotten Bob Ross. He was my first art teacher, the first to show me the magic of paint on canvas, and I still turn back to his shows when I find myself in need of inspiration or just encouragement.
