16×20 acrylic, foil, and mica on canvas. Painted to “Theme of Laura (Reprise)” from the video game Silent Hill 2.
This music – no more than a one-minute clip of piano and viola music – has haunted me since I first heard it in 2001. It plays over a scene in which we see a woman who cannot forgive herself for her sins, nor recover from the trauma that led to them. As the scene draws to a close, she ascends a burning staircase and disappears into the flames of her own imagination.
To me, this piece carries a reminder that we are each our own worst critic, and that there is a way out if we can learn to believe that the fire only exists in our own minds. The colors evoke smoke drifting through the flickering firelight, while embers of copper and gold rise like the shreds of a ruined soul.
